It’s been almost 5 years now where new laws are framed to punish the crimes against the women after a shameful inhuman act on a paramedical student of Delhi came into notice. The Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013 increased the quantum of punishments, it was enacted by the parliament of India on 3rd of April 2013 provides for the amendment of Indian Penal code (IPC), Indian Evidence Act and Criminal Procedure Code on laws related to sexual offences.

One of the rapists among 6 of them was a minor, this shows that the morals of Indian youth are at huge risk of degradation.
She was assaulted with an iron rod and caused her intestines pulled out, who died 13 days later at a hospital in Singapore, the medical officials couldn’t save her life even after she received treatment in India and Singapore. This incidence shook the entire country and there aroused many questions on the law and its functioning in the matters of women’s concern.

The other 4 convitcs were sentenced to death on September 13, 2013 by the Delhi High court. The sentence was upheld by the Supreme court in January.
Six days after the incident, central government appointed a judicial committee headed by J.S Verrma, a former chief justice of India, to suggest Amendments to Criminal Law particularly to deal with sexual assault cases. The committee included justice Leila and Gopal Subramanyam an advocate. A report was submitted on 23rdof January 2013 by the committee. The committee considered and included few suggestions received from the NGO’S and women associations.
Giving an effect to the Verma committee report the union government issued an ordiance and it was replaced by a bill, passed by the parliament and came into force on 3rd April 2013.
